HOMER WORKS is a reference app to the Greek poets major works, the Iliad and Odyssey including the ancient Greek texts (D. B. Monro - Th. W. Allen) and translations in modern Greek (N. Kazantzakis and I. Kakridis), English (A. Pope), French (C. M. R. Leconte de Lisle) and German (J. H. Voß).
The app includes a simple and easy-to-use reader, with bookmark support, text size management and reading snapshots to remember the last reading position. Several options provide customization to the text reader and user interface featuring art masterpieces inspired by Iliad and Odyssey being displayed in the background.
Pros and cons of Homer Works (Ομήρου Έπη) app for iPhone and iPad
Homer Works (Ομήρου Έπη) app good for
Great application. It includes the original Homeric version plus the modern Greek translation of Nikoskazankis. To make this App a truly universal one, just as Homers Iliad and Odyssey rightly are, please add other modern language translations that are currently in the public domain. Some of these are:
• English translation by Samuel Butler (London, 1888)
• Spanish translation by Luis Segalá y Estalella (Barcelona, 1908)
• French translation by P. Mazon (Paris, 1937)
The Iliad and the Odyssey are undoubtedly the 2 epics that have defined a great portion of Western Civilization. Another portion was defines by the Bible. On this note, there is an App that I suggest you take a look at; it includes many translations of the Bible (Apps name: Holy Bible by Paul Avery).
Here you have the world famous epic poems in 5 (!) languages, even an Ancient Greek original version.
For me as a linguist its just a perfect opportunity to compare 3 translations with the original.
Would be even better to have Russian translation added, hope well see it some time (by some time I mean very soon :D)
Once again: great job, great app!
Some bad moments
This is a wonderful app. I love having Homer in my pocket wherever I go. The only thing I would wish for is a full concordance search for the original Greek (please!)
Πολύ καλή η προσπάθεια σου Περικλή, συγχαρητήρια. Μια παράκληση μόνο, δεν ξέρω αν και κατα το πόσο είναι εφικτή η προσαρμογή της εφαρμογής στην οθόνη 4ων ιντσών του καινούριου μοντέλου της Apple iPhone 5. Ευχαριστώ εκ των προτέρων και καλή συνέχεια σου εύχομαι.
I got this to study the Ancient Greek version, so thats the only part Im reviewing. This is woefully incomplete. Even very basic features are lacking, such as:
* searching;
* translation lookup;
* interlinear translation;
* highlighting/notes;
* rapid navigation within a book--it takes a lot of scrolling to get to line 800, for example.
Until this app becomes something more than a simple scrape of data from more suitable Web sites, it doesnt deserve more than one star.
This would be a better app if the Ads were not included. Immediately I am distracted from the text. And worst of all, their use illustrates a tital lack of respect for the work, the artists and the genre. One star is too much.
